Indoor Rowing at the Invictus Games

Invictus Games Toronto 2017

This year as Canada celebrates the 150th anniversary of its Confederation, it also hosts the 2017 Invictus games. This event gives Canadians a unique opportunity to honour their ill, wounded and injured soldiers and their families. The Games take place from September 23-30 in Toronto and attract more than 550 competitors from 17 nations and 12 sports. Many of the competing countries from the 2016 Orlando Games are returning, with the Ukraine and Romania joining for the very first time.

History of the Invictus Games

Prince Harry was inspired to create this global event after attending the USA’s Warrior Games for ill, wounded and injured military personnel and veterans in 2013. The inaugural Invictus Games took place in London in 2014 and more than 400 people competed from 13 nations in nine sports. The competitors are men and women who have served their country, making a personal sacrifice for the safety of others, and shown that while they’ve been challenged, they can’t be overcome.

The Sydney Invictus Games 2018

In November 2016, Prince Harry announced the 2018 games will be held in Sydney Australia on October 20-27. Earlier this year he visited Sydney to launch the 500-day countdown. The events will be held across Greater Sydney, including Sydney Olympic Park, on and around the iconic Sydney Harbour, the Royal Botanic Gardens and the NSW Golf Course.

Indoor Rowing at Invictus Games

Indoor rowing features as a competitive sport for wounded warriors at the Invictus Games. There are two events: the 1 minute individual sprint and the 4 minute individual endurance race. There are six categories in each indoor rowing event based on the competitors’ illness or injury.

FDF is a major sponsor of Row2Recovery’s Team Trident, with Jordan Beecher winning gold in London at the 2014 Invictus Games. Known for being gentle on joints and suitable for anyone of any ability, indoor rowing can be a great sport for people limited by injury or requiring medical rehabilitation.
